The Mary Celeste was a ship found adrift the Atlantic Ocean on December 4, 1872. It was in good condition and had food and cargo, but the captain, crew, and his family had vanished. The ship wasn’t attacked and personal belongings were in place, but the ship’s lifeboat and navigation papers were missing. There was water in the hold, but it was intact otherwise. Some of the theories around why the ship was abandoned are fear of the ship sinking or some sort of foul play, even though none was ever found. I believe that a fear of the ship sinking is the most likely theory considering there was water in the hold. It is very likely that they feared the ship was sinking due to the water in the hold and took the navigation papers, boarded the lifeboat and tried to navigate to dry land nearby.
